With the German Chancellor in China – Focus on the Economy

Managing Director of Strassburger Filter Accompanies Friedrich Merz on His First Trip to China

As the first state guest of the Year of the Horse, which has just begun, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Accompanying him was a 30-member delegation comprising high-profile figures from the German business community. Among them, alongside many DAX board members, was Julia Schnitzler, managing partner of Strassburger Filter. The owner-managed medium-sized company from Westhofen in Rheinhessen has long-standing contacts in China and has had its own branch in Shanghai since 2012.

For Julia Schnitzler, fair competition and the protection of intellectual property are the greatest challenges in the Chinese market: “In addition to the high subsidies for Chinese companies, the infringement of patent rights poses a major threat to mutual trade. Clear boundaries must be drawn here to protect our intellectual property,” said Schnitzler on the sidelines of a meeting between the economic delegation and representatives of Chinese companies and Vice Premier He Lifeng. The focus here was primarily on reducing market-distorting subsidies on the Chinese side and strengthening domestic demand in China. The Federal Chancellor also aims to improve economic and political relations with China: “Mutual market access, protection of intellectual property, fair competitive conditions, and free trade—these are not one-sided demands; they are the foundations of a stable mutual partnership,” Merz emphasized following his meeting with Premier Li Qiang during the session of the German-Chinese Economic Advisory Committee.

For Strassburger Filter, China is the most important economic partner in the Asian region. The company, which is regarded as a market and innovation leader in the field of specialized filtration systems—such as those used for blood plasma fractionation—has long maintained close ties in China. The current visit provided Julia Schnitzler with the opportunity to contribute her experiences to the further shaping of the framework conditions for German companies in China.
